Iraqi Security Forces attacked from Khoder Mosque
Multinational Force – West PAO
CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq – Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition Forces killed one insurgent and detained 57 suspected insurgents Wednesday in Hit after being attacked with small arms fire from multiple locations including a mosque.
Coalition Forces observed two suspected insurgents blocking traffic and setting up an unknown object in the street in the town of Hit. The suspects jumped into a vehicle and sped off towards a building, while at the same time, indirect fire hit a Coalition vehicle nearby.
A patrol moved toward the building to which the suspected insurgents fled. Upon clearing the building, Coalition Forces detained three suspected insurgents and found weapons and ammunition.
When leaving the scene, one of the patrol vehicles slid into a ditch. When Coalition Forces attempted to pull the vehicle out, they received heavy small-arms fire and returned fire.
A cordon was established to assist in the recovery of the vehicle. The cordon was also attacked with small-arms fire, and four coalition members were wounded in the attack. A tank section arrived on scene, fired into the building from which the insurgents were shooting, and the shooting stopped.
Coalition Forces subsequently observed 20 to 30 men running out of the Al Khodar Mosque. Shortly after, 10 additional people fled the mosque and got into a truck. The truck was stopped by Coalition Forces and all 10 individuals were detained. One of the detainees was found to have a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was medically evacuated by Coalition Forces.
Iraqi Security Forces established a cordon around the mosque and were attacked with small-arms fire from inside the mosque. They returned fire and then entered the Al Khodar Mosque, detaining 39 suspected insurgents. Many others in the mosque at the time were not detained.
While the Iraqi Security Forces searched the mosque, Coalition Forces helped in establishing a cordon outside. That cordon was attacked by small-arms fire and indirect fire from an unknown location. Coalition Forces entered and cleared several nearby buildings, seizing ammunition and weapons. Five people were detained.
Elsewhere in Al Anbar on Wednesday eight enemy were killed in action. There were no Coalition Forces deaths.
One insurgent was killed while laying an IED in Ramadi. Six more insurgents engaged coalition forces in a separate event in Ramadi and were killed. One armed insurgent was killed before he could attack the government center in Ramadi.
