Insurgent Killed in Attempt to Attack Iraqi Police in Ramadi

CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq –
The Iraqi Police shot and killed an insurgent after his suicide vest failed to detonate near a checkpoint in the Jazeera suburb of Ramadi Wednesday.

The Al Anbar Provincial Auxiliary Iraqi Police determined the terrorist was wearing a suicide device before he entered the checkpoint and instructed him to stop. The terrorist attempted to set off the device, but the device failed. The insurgent began to flee the scene but was shot and killed by the police at the checkpoint.

There were no injuries or equipment damages to Iraqi Security Forces.

“This is an example of the insurgents’ attempt to discourage the men of Anbar from serving on the police force.  Despite these attempts, well qualified men continue to flood the recruiting and training centers for an opportunity to serve their province,” Marine 2nd Lt. Jill A. Leyden, MNF-W spokeswoman, said.

In the first two weeks of this month over one thousand recruits in Anbar joined the Iraqi Police.

There are now 14 police stations in the city today, compared to three in July of last year, and eight additional stations are planned for construction.

Also in Ramadi, two children were reported killed in an insurgent mortar attack at the city’s western police station Tuesday.  Two other people, including one child, were rushed to the Coalition hospital on Camp Ramadi where the child died of wounds.

There were no Iraqi security or Coalition force casualties in the attack.
