Large explosives cache discovered
Multi-National Division – North PAO
TAL AFAR, Iraq – Soldiers from the Iraqi Army discovered an elaborate underground tunnel system filled with weapons and explosives while investigating a tip of a possible improvised explosive device at a house in Tal Afar, Iraq Jan. 15.
While removing a 55-gallon drum filled with explosives, Iraqi Army soldiers discovered a tunnel leading under the suspected house to an underground room. IA soldiers entered and removed a large cache from the room.
The cache included over 200lbs of explosives and propellants, more than 125 rockets and other projectiles and 2500 7.62mm rounds of ammunition.
Coalition explosive ordnance disposal specialists, and Soldiers from C Co., 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, destroyed the captured munitions.
