Troops bring gifts to hospitalized kids

BAGHDAD – Ten Iraq Security Assistance Mission personnel delivered bags of comfort items to 200 hospitalized kids at the Children’s Central Teaching Hospital here Sunday.

The group, comprised of members of the U.S. Air Force, Army and Marine Corps, delivered goods donated by a variety of non-profit organizations in the United States.

As part of the contributions, the Foundation for Hospital Art supplied murals that were painted by cadets at the U.S. Military Academy last fall as part of their annual “Paint Fest.”

While this event marked the first time the organization delivered donated items to a hospital, it is their fourth outreach trip overall. Previous trips included delivering school supplies to two Iraqi elementary schools and an orphanage.

“What we do is try to provide the children, whether at a school, a hospital or an orphanage, a little happiness, a little warmth, a smile and a hug – something they can hold both emotionally and physically – and know that not only do we care, but so do all those other Americans making donations,” said U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Mike Anderson, a security assistance officer with ISAM.
