BAGHDAD – We join President Obama, Vice President Biden and Secretary of State Clinton in commending Iraq’s political leaders on their success in forming an inclusive and representative government - a victory for the Iraqi people.  This pivotal accomplishment reflects the will of the Iraqi people and their commitment to the democratic process.  We look forward to working with the new coalition government in furthering our common vision of a democratic Iraq that is reintegrated fully into the community of nations and serves as a force for stability in the region.

The new government is the product of a credible, Iraqi-led process in which leaders achieved compromise through peaceful dialogue and demonstrated commitment to unity and reconciliation.  This process was successful because of the strength and resolve of the Iraqi people and the courage and professionalism of Iraq’s security forces.  As Iraq’s security partner, we were encouraged to see that, throughout the government formation process, Iraq’s security forces improved the overall security situation and protected Iraqis from those who seek to do them harm and disrupt Iraq’s progress.

As Iraq’s leaders now focus their attention on serving the Iraqi people and helping Iraq achieve its tremendous potential, the United States will assist Iraq in meeting its challenges and building our partnership under our Strategic Framework Agreement, in the fields of security, economics and trade, energy, science and technology, education, health, rule of law, regional relations, culture, and many others.
