CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq – Thousands of citizens in the southern provinces of Dhi Qar, Maysan and Muthanna flocked to polls to cast their votes under the protection of the Iraqi Security Forces on March 7.
No violent incidents occurred in these three provinces with millions of residents spread across an area the size of South Carolina.
Iraqi Security Forces leaders hosted U.S. Forces commanders from 4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division at their headquarters in Amarah, Nasiriyah, Samawah and other locations in order to coordinate reconnaissance missions and share communications systems with their American counterparts.
On the streets and at the polls, Iraqi Security Forces were present.
In Maysan, Provincial Council Chair Abd al-Hussein Abd al-Ridha al-Saadi and an Iraqi Army Reconnaissance battalion commander took flight over several cities to assess security and voter participation. The chairperson praised local ISF leaders for their professionalism.
By midday, Iraqi Police chiefs lifted curfews and a sense of normalcy swept the provinces.
"The extensive planning, rehearsals, and coordination by ISF clearly demonstrate their professional growth and belie their intense desire to become completely responsible for the security of their country and their fellow citizens,” said Col. Peter Newell, commander of 4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division. "The success of the election laid on the foundation of security provided by Iraqi Security Forces, was evident in the eyes of the Iraqi people. They are truly proud of the ISF’s accomplishments."
