SAMARRA, Iraq
– Paratroopers from 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, discovered three weapons caches today south of Samarra during a mission based on a tip from local Iraqis.

More than 250 rockets, mortars, and various other artillery rounds were found.  Propane tanks, wires, and other bomb-making materials were dispersed among the three caches.  Several large-caliber machineguns and other small arms were also found.

“In the past month, we have found over 500 rounds of artillery which could have been used to make acar bombs and other roadside bombs,” said Lt. Col. Viet Luong, commander of 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment.  “The people in and around Samarra are tired of these attacks and are helping us to find these weapons.”
