FALLUJAH, Iraq – Iraqi Army Forces, with Coalition Forces as advisers, killed three insurgents while conducting a time-sensitive helicopter assault mission near Karmah Sept. 13.

Iraqi Army members led the raid at a Mosque to detain a high-ranking al Qaeda in Iraq leader responsible for insurgent activity in and around Karmah.

The targeted insurgent is believed to be the leader of the Islamic state of Iraq in the Karmah area and purportedly oversees multiple terrorist cells.

The network conducts murders and intimidation campaigns and attacks using improvised explosive devices, snipers and small arms fire. He is also allegedly linked to infrastructure attacks and facilitating foreign fighters.

At the targeted location, individuals who fled from the Mosque engaged and wounded three Coalition Force members while they were being pursued.

With ground fire and close air support, Iraqi and Coalition Forces killed the insurgents. A MEDEVAC helicopter transported the wounded Coalition members to a Baghdad Combat Support Hospital where all three underwent surgery for non-life threatening injuries.

The injured were in stable condition and will be transported to Landstuhl Army Medical Center in Germany for follow-on medical treatment.

Four rockets, propellants, 50-caliber ammunition rounds and improvised explosive device materials were discovered at the Mosque during the operation. The items were removed from the location and destroyed in a controlled detonation.
