Press Release 20100209-01
Feb. 9, 2010

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Security Forces arrested 11 suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) cell members, including the suspected emir and two deputies of the cell, during a joint security operation conducted today in a rural area located approximately 127 km northwest of Baghdad.

Pursuant to a warrant issued by an Iraqi court, the 3rd Emergency Services Unit and U.S. advisors searched several buildings for five suspected members of an AQI cell believed to be responsible for maintaining weapons caches and carrying out deadly attacks against both civilians and security forces within the area.

Within the buildings, the security team discovered a shotgun, numerous AK-47 assault rifles, packaging material used to transport explosives, and Jayish Rijal al-Tariq al-Naqshibandi terrorist group propaganda. In addition, the security team found a small rocket, which explosives-ordnance disposal technicians safely destroyed.

Preliminary questioning and evidence collected at the scene led Iraqi Police to identify and arrest all five warranted AQI-cell members, who included the suspected emir and two deputies, and six suspected criminal accomplices.
