ISF kill suspected AQI criminal associate, arrest another

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Security Forces killed one and arrested another suspected Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) criminal associate during a joint security operation in Muqdadiyah.
ISF and U.S. advisors searched several buildings for a suspected AQI member who is allegedly responsible for building and emplacing magnetically attached improvised explosives devices.
While approaching the targeted building, the security force observed an individual carrying an AK-47 assault rifle in a palm grove to the south of the building. As ISF surrounded the grove, the individual exhibited hostile intent and engaged the security force. Reacting in self-defense to a visible threat, the security force shot the suspect, killing him.
Because the suspect exhibited hostile intent towards the security force, the ISF was within its authority to escalate force in a manner compliant with the rules of engagement to preserve the lives of ISF members and others.
Information and evidence gathered at the scene led Iraqi forces to identify and arrest one suspected AQI criminal associate.
All joint operations are conducted pursuant to a warrant issued by an Iraqi judge.
ISF and U.S. advisors conduct joint operations in accordance with the Security Agreement and in coordination with the Iraqi government to target terrorists seeking to disrupt the security and stability of Iraq.
