CAMP CROPPER, Iraq – In a continuous effort to strengthen security forces in Iraq, Soldiers of the 89th Military Police Brigade train Iraqi federal police security guards on searching techniques at the Judicial Development Institute in Baghdad Feb. 18.

Out of the approximately 5,130 FPSs who guard government buildings all over Iraq, approximately 50 participated in the training on personnel and vehicle searches. These men act as subject matter experts and trainers for the other guards to ensure that everyone learns the information.

The individual search portion of the class was split into two techniques, a simple pat down for higher officials and techniques to regain control in a risky situation.

“These searches are the basics,” said Sgt. Jarvaneus Harris, 89th MP Bde. personnel security detail team leader. “It determines what things are brought onto an installation. Teaching them to search vehicles and personnel is the first step in preventing many attacks happening on posts and at the gates.”

“If they apply the training it will protect the visitors and the compound,” said Maj. Ruse Wiley, 89th MP Bde. Force Protection officer in charge. “They don’t know who the enemy is.”

Iraqi official were very pleased with the training and look forward to more training with U.S. forces in order to perfect their security.

“It was a very good training today with the forces,” said Assistant of the General Manager Samil, in charge of security guards and the administration of the high judge council. “They got information and experience as well as the practical exercise.”

“I am very excited, but we still need cooperation with the forces and more experience to handle it properly,” Samil said in regards to their readiness to gain complete control of their guard posts.

“It’s really exciting sharing training, experience and knowledge with our Iraqi counterparts,” Wiley said. “It will definitely happen again in the near future.”

In addition to the training, the 89th Force Protection team conducted a vulnerability assessment on the JDI compound which resulted in new T-walls, guard shacks and an improved entry control point.
