Suicide VBIED attacks target Bayji security leadership
Multi-National Division – North PAO
TIKRIT, Iraq – Two suicide VBIED attacks were directed against Iraqi Police leadership in Salah ad Din province Oct. 9.
Terrorists directed two SVBIED attacks against the private residences of the Bayji Iraqi Police chief and a local Concerned Local Citizen leader in the northern and eastern sections of the city.
“This cowardly act was a sign of desperation by terrorists, in an attempt to disrupt security forces and Concerned Local Citizens who have joined together to combat terrorism throughout Salah ad Din and other areas of northern Iraq,” said Col. Bryan Owens, commander, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.
The first SVBIED killed seven and wounded at least 21. The blast also destroyed two nearby homes. The Iraqi Police chief was not injured during the attack.
A second SVBIED detonated near the CLC leader’s residence, killing at five IPs, two civilians and wounding two Iraqi Policemen and 19 others. It also destroyed one home and damaged three others. The CLC leader was not injured.
“These attacks on the local community show these terrorists have a complete disregard for human life and lack of respect for Iraqi lives and property,” said Owens. “Iraqi Security Forces and Concerned Local Citizens will continue to hunt these extremists to prevent senseless attacks on the people of Salah ad Din province.”
The Iraqi Police took charge of the scene and all casualties were transported to the Bayji Hospital.
The incident remains under investigation by the Iraqi Police.
