US troop levels in Iraq down to 50,000

BAGHDAD – Today, in line with President Obama’s direction and as part of the Responsible Drawdown of Forces, U.S. military force levels in Iraq are below 50,000. U.S. military forces will transition to Operation New Dawn, effective Sept 1, 2010.
U.S. Forces - Iraq will continue to advise, train and assist the Iraqi Security Forces, support partnered counter-terrorism operations, and support the U.S. Embassy, Provincial Reconstruction Teams and other nongovernmental organizations dedicated to building Iraqi civil capacity, until the end of our mission in December 2011.
The U.S. continues to comply with the Security Agreement and remains committed to an enduring strategic partnership through the Strategic Framework Agreement that will benefit Iraq and the region through increased security, political, and economic stability.
